Cement and steel are the most commonly used building materials in the construction industry and collectively contribute to 15% of the total global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Globally, building construction and operation accounts for 39% of the total GHG emissions, of which 11% is due to material used in building construction.
As India continues its growth story, rapid urbanisation and increasing population will escalate energy consumption and GHG emissions due to increased construction activity. Therefore, adopting sustainable building construction practices becomes essential for a low carbon economy and to achieve the 1.5°C Paris Agreement goal.
Sustainable building construction would require considerations on low carbon design approaches, improved construction techniques, circular economy strategies and alternate low carbon material options. In recent years a lot of research is happening on this front. This webinar aims to sensitize key stakeholders on the low carbon approaches including innovations happening in design and construction, alternate materials, and circular economy measures.
