Background

India’s rapid economic growth, marked by an expanding middle-income group and swift urbanization, has propelled it to become the third-largest energy consumer worldwide. Further, India’s total energy demand will increase by 3.5 times to 2200 MTOE, in 2047 from 2022 levels[1]. This surge underscores the critical need for a sustainable approach to energy consumption, aligning with India’s ambitious goals for a low-carbon future. States and UTs have a pivotal role to play in energy efficiency advancement. As per the Energy Conservation Act (EC) 2001, the states and UTs have constituted SDAs to coordinate, regulate, and enforce provisions of the EC Act within the state in alignment with the state’s own socio-economic development goals.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), in association with Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), developed the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI). As the nation grapples with the pressing need for sustainable energy practices, the State Energy Efficiency Index serves as a crucial benchmark, offering insights into the performance and progress of different regions. The SEEI is a tool designed to track EE initiatives in the states and UT across 7 demand sectors namely Buildings, Industries, Municipal Services, Transport, Agriculture, DISCOM, and Cross-Sector. It’s a helpful tool for SDAs to create data-driven policies and programs, set energy-savings targets, and track progress and achievements in energy efficiency. The fifth edition of the index, which tracks the energy efficiency progress of states/UTs for the financial year 2022-23, was launched by Shri R.K. Singh, Honourable Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy, Government of India at the 22nd Foundation Day of BEE in New Delhi on March 01, 2024.

Webinar Objective

In this webinar, participants will engage in meaningful conversations, share knowledge, and foster collaborations that drive positive change. The ultimate aim is to inspire and empower stakeholders to adopt and champion energy-efficient practices, benefiting both their states and the country as a whole. Attendees can anticipate gaining valuable insights into innovative approaches, best practices, and success stories from states that have excelled in energy efficiency. Additionally, discussions will extend beyond the current index, exploring the trajectory of energy efficiency goals and initiatives for the future.

The webinar will emphasise the importance and benefits of continuous tracking and reporting through the index.

Expected Outcomes

  • Showcase innovative approaches taken by states to facilitate the adoption of energy efficiency.
  • Encourage peer-to-peer learning among states for enhanced energy efficiency adoption.
  • Enable dialogue and cooperation on efficiency and energy-linked NDC fulfilment.
  • Mainstream monitoring and reporting of energy data.
