The electrification of transport in the Himalayan region is critical for the sustainability of this ecologically sensitive region. Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption is important from the perspective of emissions and pollution reduction. The transition to this low carbon technology also opens up avenues for new employment and investment in the region. The electrification of commercial and public transport fleets in the North-Eastern Region (NER) region is gaining traction Currently, the states of Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya have announced their policies to accelerate the adoption of EVs and create a pool of skilled work force to support the transition in the region. The time is right to explore the opportunities and devise strategies for the electrification of road transport in NER. In this direction, the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE) has undertaken the project titled “Electrification of Fleet Transport in Himalayas– Focus on North East India”. The project aims to support actions underway by the state governments by designing strategies for transport decarbonization, facilitating pilot projects and developing an inclusive mobility plan.
As a part of this project, AEEE is organizing a workshop on “E-mobility in Public Transport” with a focus on adopting E-Buses in Schools of Meghalaya, on February 17, 2023, at Vivanta, Shillong to apprise the relevant stakeholders discuss the deployment strategy and discuss the challenges, opportunities, learnings, and outcomes of the initiatives. The knowledge-sharing sessions will help develop the institutional capacity of the stakeholders.
