Background Note
India is positioning itself as a global frontrunner in the fight against climate change, making bold commitments on international platforms and implementing decisive measures to transition toward a low-carbon economy. As the global energy landscape shifts toward cleaner, low-carbon systems, sustainability has become a strategic priority particularly for rapidly industrializing nations like India. The country is advancing this agenda by expanding renewable energy capacity, encouraging sustainable industrial practices, and fostering innovation in green technologies.
In line with these national priorities, the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE) has launched a focused initiative to support the sustainable transformation of the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in Maharashtra. Through an in-depth study, AEEE identified the Thane-Belapur Chemical Cluster as a high-potential area for integrating sustainable practices into industrial operations. This cluster presents significant opportunities for adopting low-carbon solutions such as electrification of thermal processes, energy efficiency improvements, establishment of common facility centres, and deployment of carbon mitigation technologies.
To drive this transformation, AEEE along with Thane Belapur Industry Association (TBIA) is convening a stakeholder consultation workshop focused on sustainable solutions for MSMEs in the Thane chemical cluster. The workshop will highlight key sustainability practices and promote awareness of the Accelerating Deployment of Innovative Technologies for Energy Efficiency (ADITEE) scheme, along with the innovative “Steam as a Service” (SaaS) model. These initiatives aim to empower industries to adopt sustainable technologies by addressing financial, technical, and operational challenges.
This consultation will serve as a collaborative platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and partnership among key stakeholders including industry representatives, technology providers, policymakers, and financial institutions, to collectively advance the decarbonization of the MSME sector and chart a sustainable path forward.
