The current means of addressing the increasing cooling demand in India involve a lot of artificial refrigerants (RACs), leading to the greenhouse effect and urban heat islands. Buildings suffer from uncontrolled heat gain through their skin, which creates an urgent need for thermal comfort. The adoption of climate-appropriate building envelopes and passive cooling strategies is an integral step in reducing the energy demand for cooling and can reduce direct heat gain through building envelopes.
Trees are the ‘coolers’ in nature, utilizing the process of evapotranspiration to cool their surroundings. Inspired by this natural process, CoolAnt designs and explores passive cooling building facades using traditional systems and natural phenomena like evapotranspiration.
CoolAnt uses the potent combination of terracotta and water to cool the air. This idea is realized as a hybrid Jali, optimized to channel airflow through a nozzle effect and also flexible to cater to different locations and sun angles.
