A Consumer Information Rating Tool

In the context of nudging consumer preference towards Electric Vehicles (EVs) and aiding the government to fulfil the broader objective to promote e-mobility, AEEE had rolled out the Green Vehicle Rating (GVR-I). It is the country’s only vehicle rating system based on environmental performance. It serves as a consumer information tool that identifies high to low performing vehicle models, in the two and three-wheeler segments. It measures the negative impacts of GHG emissions and criteria pollutants released from the tailpipes of widely sold vehicle models. Along with a comparative analysis of vehicle models, the GVR spotlights the external costs of pollution from vehicle exhausts – both GHGs and criteria pollutants. The monetized negative externalities to the environment are used to calculate the real cost of ownership of a vehicle. Moving beyond retail price-tags, GVR aims to widen the criteria for vehicle purchase in India to include environmental performance. In its second phase, GVR-II intends to incorporate EV two and three wheelers as part of their vehicle database.
